Picture shows 6-foot-tall, 7 days old giraffe named James XII, who was born at the Bronx Zoo in New York on Christmas Day. James XII crashed into the world just after 12:30 p.m on Christmas, dropping more than six feet from his standing mother, Clara, as giraffes always do, head first. James is Clara's ninth baby, a huge achievement for the giraffe, who at 27 is well beyond normal child-bearing years. His father, James V, died of old age about seven months ago. Clara carried James for nearly 15 months, keeping her keepers guessing for much of the time whether the old giraffe was really pregnant. Still a bit shy and scared, James spends his days nuzzling up to his mother, playing and running away from his 8-year-old shister, Margaret, who is a bit jealous of their mother's attention.
